«The first thing that strikes one as soon as one opens The Sea of Grass is its literary solidity. The 19 stories that comprise the volume are impeccably crafted. Romero displays careful language, millimetric structural precision, and a complex of sober metaphors that are nonetheless original. Special mention should be made of such brilliant stories as The Cormorant, Tony the Mechanic, The Light That Never Goes Out, A Perfect World, The Funeral, The Snowman , and The Sea of Grass , the final piece in the book. Nor could the pedigree that supports any artistic proposal worthy of the name be missing. The Sea of Grass has it, and of the highest quality. Among its literary predecessors are such indisputable writers as Tobias Wolff, Carver, Cheever, Lucia Berlin, and, in general, the heirs of the North American realist school spearheaded in their time by Hemingway and Salinger. The most interesting thing is that Romero reactivates this heritage, giving the current decline of industrial society the meaning of a myth as personal as it is lucid.
